Michelle Tong
I originally from Ashland, Ohio. During my time at Ashland High School, I was involved in many different areas. My first love was art and the creativity that comes with design. I do particularly enjoy acrylic painting. Other areas I was involved include the tech team for the spring musical, President of FCA, Secretary of National Honors Society, member of the school newspaper for 3 years, and video production for 3 years.
After high school I moved to Illinois to attend Olivet Nazarene University. I graduated in May 2021 with a BS in Multimedia Communications and a concentration in TV and Video Production. While at Olivet, I served as a Resident Assistant for two years with freshman girls for a year and upperclassman girls the second year. I also worked hard academically and made the dean’s list every semester.
After college I began working as a Youth Services Assistant at the Bourbonnais Public Library in Bourbonnais, Illinois. It was here that I quickly caught the library bug and decided to pursue a Masters of Library Science. I began classes in January of 2023 at Emporia State University and am expected to graduate in December of 2024.
Expertises
Children’s Library Programming
I have great expertise in serving children. I have planned and implemented programs like a Sweetheart Tea, New Years Eve Party, and special storytimes. I was also instrumental in the relaunch of baby storytime post-COVID and the launch of a new regular sensory play group.
Videography
I have been involved in video production beginning in 2016. I have done many personal and academic projects.

Collection Development
I have experience in building collections, weeding, and seeking out important topical books like hard feelings, potty training, and disabilities. I have done many careful weedings. I currently order for the Easy Fiction, Juvenile Non-Fiction, Juvenile Fiction, and Juvenile Graphic Novel collections at White Oak Library District. I have also processed many books to prepare them for the shelf.
Summer Reading and Wall Displays
I was on the Summer Reading Committee for two years at the Bourbonnais Public Library and took the lead in large-scale paper wall art. See Library Projects for examples.
Journalism
I have experience with print journalism and page editing during my time in high school. I have written many stories, edited pages, and I was the paper’s cartoonist for two years. At Olivet, I took many classes about video journalism. I also had two semesters of Access ONU as a backpack journalist.

Intern at Campus Outreach
2017 – 2018
This short-term internship involved the production of a recap video for the New Years Conference 2017-18.
Intern at The Bridge Teen Center
July 2020 – Oct 2020
This position had me as the Video and Media Intern for the Bridge. I took photographs and got video footage from large events with the teens. I also created a training video for volunteers.
Media Team at Beulah Beach Camp
2019 – 2019
This position required Michelle to plan, shot, compile, edit, and distribute 8 different recap videos for multiple camps. She also did photography for two camps and worked on 8 different skit videos. She also ran the sound board for the travelling camp and used Pro-presenter to manage worship slides.
